Who's Visiting?

Harvard Medical School

Website: http://hms.harvard.edu/admissions/

I am a foreign student. Will that affect my chances of getting in to HMS?
Foreign students who have studied for at least one year at an accredited institution in the United States or Canada, and have completed the requirements, are eligible to apply at HMS. International applicants should make every effort to take the majority of required courses at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada. Foreign students who do not have a baccalaureate or advanced degree from an institution in the U.S. or Canada are rarely offered admission.

Do I need to take the TOEFL to test my English fluency?
You do not need to take the TOEFL. However, we do require, at minimum, one year of previous education taught in the United States or Canada as a prerequisite to admission. Fluency in English is expected.

My undergrad degree is from an institution outside of the United States and Canada. Can I still apply to HMS?
A limited number of required courses taken outside the U.S. or Canada may be used to fulfill requirements, to be determined on a case-by-case basis. Every effort should be made to take the majority of required courses at an accredited college or university in the U.S. or Canada. In any case, at least one year of full-time academic work in the U.S. or Canada is required. Foreign students who do not have a baccalaureate or advanced degree from an institution in the United States or Canada are rarely offered admission.

Are international students eligible for financial aid?
International Students are eligible to apply for need-based financial institutional scholarships and loans. More information can be found at the HMS Financial Aid Office website

Georgetown Medical School

Website: http://som.georgetown.edu/prospectivestudents/degrees/md/73240.html

Do you accept non-citizen applicants?
Applications are considered without regard to residency, citizenship, or visa status. All applicants must meet the same criteria.

It does not look like Georgetown is very financial-aid friendly for international students. Their website suggests that no aid is available to international students. I would check with their office if I were applying.

Accepted applicants who are not citizens of the United States must submit the Georgetown University Immigration Questionnaire (Student Financial Certification Form) to the Office of International Student Services. The form will be furnished to accepted applicants in the spring of 2012. With certain exceptions, non-immigrants applying for admission to the United States must hold valid entry visas. F-1 visas are for individuals intending to enter the United States for the purpose of pursuing a full course of study.

In conjunction with the submission of the Questionnaire, U.S. Department of Homeland Security regulations require Georgetown University to obtain certification that applicants requesting F-1 visas have adequate financial resources to provide for their expenses without resorting to unauthorized employment. Supporting documentation must accompany the form.

Yes. International students are welcome to apply.

All applicants must plan to complete a four-year undergraduate college degree program. If your undergraduate degree is from a college or university in the United States or Canada , the college or university must be regionally accredited in order for you to qualify for admission to Emory. If your undergraduate degree is from a college outside the United States, you must complete all science course requirements, including 2 semesters of biology with lab, 2 semesters of chemistry with lab, 2 semesters of organic chemistry with lab and 2 semesters of physical science with lab (and English, if English language skills are not strong) at an accredited U.S. or Canadian college before submitting an application to Emory.

What financial aid is available to international students?

Please note that citizens of foreign countries are ineligible to receive U.S. federal financial aid, but may be eligible to receive merit-based scholarships.

Permanent residents with I-151, I-551, or I-551C VISAS are eligible for federal financial aid, as well as merit-based scholarships.

All international students are required by Emory University to show proof of ability to pay all four years of tuition prior to becoming admitted—eligibility for scholarship cannot be determined until the student is admitted

Duke Medical School

Website: http://dukemed.duke.edu/modules/flash_articles/

Do you consider international students?
The School of Medicine values the enrichment that comes from having talented international students participate in the medical doctor program.

Financial Aid
  1. Grant-The School of Medicine will make available funding for a need-based grant program in 2011-2012. Please understand that limited grant funding is awarded based on the number of aid applicants to include newly admitted students.
  2. Loans- The School of Medicine will offer institutional loan. The loan will be an unsubsidized 7% loan that has an automatic three-year repayment deferral for residency purposes.
  3. Parental or sponsor support- based on need analysis, parents and/or sponsors may be expected to contribute to the student’s cost of education. The parental financial analysis will demonstrate the ability to contribute not necessarily the willingness to contribute which is the same criterion used for U. S. students. Please submit in English the local equivalent of a U. S. tax return from the applicant’s home country. If this does not exist, you should submit a statement from the employer confirming all income. International students can then choose to borrow from outside sources to cover this expected contribution,
More details here: http://medschool.duke.edu/modules/som_aid/index.php?id=3

PS: When I was applying, Duke wanted me to put in 4 years of tuition fees into an escrow account, so this is quite a change!

Dartmouth Medical School

Financial Aid:
Federal regulations governing Title IV and Title VII Programs require United States Citizenship or Permanent Resident status. Please contact our Office for a listing of alternative education loans.

Creighton Medical School

Website: http://medschool.creighton.edu/medicine/oma/index.php

Creighton University School of Medicine welcomes applications from International Students who wish to study medicine.

In order to qualify for admissions into the School of Medicine students are required to complete their premedical course requirements at an accredited institution located within the United States or Canada. Preference is given to applicants who have completed a baccalaureate degree at an institution located within the United States or Canada.

We recognize that graduate study within the United States is desirable, however substitution of graduate coursework for undergraduate premedical course requirements is not allowed.

Weill Cornell Medical College

Only for the mega rich!

Website: http://www.med.cornell.edu/education/admissions/

Do you consider foreign students or graduates from a foreign university?
We welcome applications to the first year class from international students. There are, however, two separate issues that international students need to consider:
  • Cost: Financial aid is offered only to those applicants who are US citizens or permanent residents of the US. Persons who are not US citizens or permanent residents must either pay for four years of tuition in advance, or deposit this sum in an escrow account (approximately US$178,600 in 2009). Canadian citizens are exempted from this requirement.

  • Prior educational experience: We strongly encourage you to complete a minimum of one year of full time course work at an American college and to take courses in chemistry (organic and general), physics, biology and/or English before applying to medical school. If you have not completed the equivalent of a US bachelor's degree abroad, you should work towards doing so in the U.S. This gives you and us a perspective on how well you could do at an American Medical College, and thus a basis of comparison with other applicants. We suggest this even if you have completed all or part of a medical school curriculum abroad and even if you have obtained your permanent resident status.
They currently list 2 international students in their incoming class of 2010.

University of Connecticut School of Medicine

International students are not eligible for federal loans and scholarships.

Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons

Website: http://www.amc.edu/Academic/Undergraduate/index.html

Do you accept non-citizen applicants?
Attendance for at least three full academic years at an accredited college in the U.S. or Canada is required. It is rare for individuals who have received premedical education at schools outside of the United States and Canada to be offered admission to P&S. So, as long as you did undergrad in the US or Canada, you should be ok.

Financial Aid
International students are not eligible for federal financial aid (Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans, Perkins Loans, and Direct Graduate PLUS Loans, or Work-Study). If you will be applying for consideration for school based scholarships and low-cost institutional loans you must submit the P&S International Student and Family Questionnaire and the Certification of Finances Form. You also need to submit additional required documents, including tax forms (with English translation, if necessary), as indicated in the section on How to Apply for Financial Aid These forms must provide parental income and asset information translated into US dollar amounts at official rates of exchange as of the day of filing the form. In some cases, additional documentation will be requested.
